Coris aygula
Family: Labridae ยท Wrasses
Also known as: Clown Wrasse, Twinspot Wrasse, Humphead Coris
The Clown Coris is one of the largest wrasse species in the world, capable of reaching a staggering 47 inches in length. This species undergoes one of the most dramatic color transformations in the fish world. Juveniles are white with striking black-bordered orange spots and are among the most attractive fish available in the trade. However, adults transform completely, developing a dark greenish-black body with a prominent fleshy hump on the forehead that gives them a prehistoric appearance.
Due to its enormous adult size, the Clown Coris is primarily a species for public aquariums or the largest private installations. Juveniles are frequently sold to unsuspecting hobbyists who are unaware of the ultimate size this species will achieve. This fish is an extremely powerful invertebrate predator that will consume urchins, crabs, snails, and virtually any other invertebrate it encounters.
The Clown Coris is aggressive as an adult and requires massive amounts of swimming space. Despite these challenges, it is an incredibly hardy and long-lived species. Adults develop a unique bump on the head that is used for dominance displays. A very deep sand bed and industrial-strength lid are essential for keeping this behemoth wrasse.
The Clown Coris is a powerful carnivore that uses its strong pharyngeal teeth to crush hard-shelled prey including sea urchins, crabs, mollusks, and other invertebrates. In captivity, offer large pieces of shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, and whole fish. Adults have enormous appetites. This species will consume all invertebrates in the aquarium. Feed two to three times daily with substantial portions.
The Clown Coris is aggressive as an adult and should only be housed with other very large, robust fish species. It will consume all invertebrates. Juveniles are more peaceful but grow rapidly. Adults dominate their tank and may injure smaller species. Suitable only for very large fish-only or public aquarium systems.
Check CompatibilityClown Coris wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. The massive adult size makes captive breeding entirely impractical. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught, typically sold as attractive juveniles.
