Arothron hispidus
Family: Tetraodontidae ยท Pufferfish
Also known as: Stars and Stripes Puffer, White-Spotted Puffer, Hispid Puffer, Striped Puffer
The Stars & Stripes Puffer is one of the largest and most impressive pufferfish species available in the marine aquarium trade. Its common name perfectly describes its appearance: the body is covered in a complex pattern of white spots (stars) scattered across a gray-brown to olive-green base, while bold white stripes radiate around the eyes and extend along the belly. The overall effect is a striking, almost military-inspired pattern that becomes even more elaborate and impressive as the fish grows. Adults can reach a formidable 19 inches in length, making this a true showpiece fish that demands a large, dedicated aquarium.
The Stars & Stripes Puffer shares the endearing personality traits common to Arothron puffers, developing strong recognition of its keeper and often interacting enthusiastically at feeding time. Its large, expressive eyes and beak-like mouth give it a charismatic appearance, and it will frequently follow its owner's movements, spit water at the surface for attention, and even allow physical interaction. This level of interactivity has earned puffers in general the nickname 'aquatic puppies,' and the Stars & Stripes Puffer is among the most engaging of the group.
However, the significant adult size of this species means it is suitable only for advanced aquarists who can provide a very large aquarium of 180 gallons or more. The bioload produced by a 19-inch pufferfish is substantial, requiring robust filtration, heavy protein skimming, and diligent water quality management. Like all Arothron puffers, it is absolutely not reef-safe and will destroy any invertebrate in the aquarium. Its powerful fused beak teeth require regular hard-shelled food items to prevent dangerous overgrowth.
Stars & Stripes Puffers are carnivores with powerful beaks designed for crushing hard-shelled prey. In the wild, they feed on sponges, algae, tunicates, crustaceans, mollusks, corals, and echinoderms. In captivity, offer a hearty diet of frozen krill, shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, and silversides. Whole hard-shelled foods including snails, crab legs, crayfish, and clams are essential to wear down their continuously growing teeth. Feed once to twice daily and monitor for overgrowth of the dental plate.
The Stars & Stripes Puffer is relatively peaceful toward fish too large to consume but will destroy all invertebrates. Compatible with other large, robust species such as groupers, large tangs, triggerfish, large angelfish, and moray eels. Will consume any shrimp, crabs, snails, urchins, and starfish. Not safe for reef aquariums. Its large size and powerful bite can intimidate or injure smaller tankmates. May release toxins if severely stressed.
Check CompatibilityStars & Stripes Puffers have not been bred in home aquariums. Their large adult size, extended pelagic larval stage, and poorly understood reproductive behavior make captive breeding impractical. In the wild, they are presumed to be pelagic spawners like other Arothron species.
