Arothron diadematus
Family: Tetraodontidae Β· Pufferfish
Also known as: Masked Blowfish, Diadem Puffer, Red Sea Masked Puffer
The Masked Puffer is a distinctive and sought-after Arothron species endemic to the Red Sea, making it one of the more geographically restricted pufferfish available in the aquarium trade. Its most striking feature is the bold dark mask-like marking that extends across the eyes and face, contrasting dramatically with the lighter gray to tan body. The body may display scattered dark spots, and the overall appearance is both unusual and immediately recognizable.
As a Red Sea endemic, the Masked Puffer inhabits the coral reefs and rocky areas of this unique marine environment. It feeds on a variety of invertebrates, algae, and encrusting organisms, using its powerful fused beak to crush hard-shelled prey. Adults can reach approximately 12 inches in length, making this a moderately large pufferfish that requires a substantial aquarium of at least 125 gallons.
In captivity, the Masked Puffer is moderately hardy and adapts well to aquarium life with proper care. It develops the intelligent, personable character typical of Arothron puffers, learning to recognize its keeper and actively engaging during feeding time. Like all large puffers, it is absolutely not reef-safe and will consume any invertebrate it encounters. Its Red Sea origin and distinctive appearance make it a prized species among puffer enthusiasts, though its limited collection range can make it less commonly available and more expensive than its Indo-Pacific counterparts.
Masked Puffers are carnivores that feed on sponges, crustaceans, mollusks, tunicates, and algae in the wild. In captivity, offer a varied diet of frozen krill, shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, and marine pellets. Hard-shelled foods such as whole shrimp, snails, crabs, and crayfish must be provided regularly to wear down their continuously growing fused beak. Feed once to twice daily.
The Masked Puffer is semi-aggressive and may intimidate smaller or passive tankmates. Compatible with large tangs, triggerfish, large angelfish, groupers, and other robust species. Will consume all invertebrates including shrimp, crabs, snails, and urchins. Not safe for reef aquariums. May release toxins under extreme stress. Avoid housing with much smaller fish that could be bullied or consumed.
Check CompatibilityMasked Puffers have not been successfully bred in home aquariums. Like other Arothron species, they are presumed to be pelagic spawners with an extended larval phase. Their restricted Red Sea range and limited captive availability make breeding attempts extremely rare.
