Corythoichthys intestinalis
Family: Syngnathidae ยท Pipefish
Also known as: Banded Messmate Pipefish, Australian Messmate Pipefish
The Scribbled Pipefish is named for the intricate scribbled or reticulated pattern that adorns its slender, armored body. The coloration features a complex network of thin dark lines and markings over a lighter tan or cream base, creating an effect that resembles delicate handwritten script running along the body. At approximately 6.5 inches, this is a moderately sized member of the Corythoichthys genus that offers good visual presence while remaining manageable in a modest aquarium. Its subtle but intricate patterning becomes increasingly beautiful the closer one looks.
In the wild, Corythoichthys intestinalis is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, from Indonesia and the Philippines through Australia, Papua New Guinea, and east to Fiji. It is a bottom-dwelling species found on sandy reef flats, rubble areas, and seagrass beds, where it moves slowly along the substrate, probing crevices and surfaces with its tubular snout in an endless search for tiny copepods and amphipods. It is often found in pairs, with mates staying in relatively close proximity as they forage across the reef flat.
The Scribbled Pipefish is an expert-level species that demands the specialized care common to all syngnathids. Its diet consists exclusively of tiny live crustaceans, making a mature aquarium with a thriving microfauna population and a productive refugium essential for long-term success. A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, with ample live rock, varied bottom terrain, and extremely peaceful tankmates that will not compete for food. Despite the considerable challenges, the Scribbled Pipefish rewards dedicated keepers with fascinating foraging behavior, a unique appearance, and the opportunity to observe pair-bonding dynamics in this remarkable family of fishes.
Scribbled Pipefish are specialized micro-predators feeding on copepods, amphipods, and other tiny benthic crustaceans. A well-established aquarium with a dense pod population and a productive refugium are essential. Some specimens may learn to accept frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp, but live microfauna should constitute the bulk of the diet. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day when accepting any prepared foods.
The Scribbled Pipefish must be housed with only the most peaceful, non-competitive tankmates. It cannot compete for food with any active species. Ideal companions include seahorses, other pipefish species, mandarin dragonets, and very small peaceful gobies. Best kept as a pair in a dedicated species tank or an extremely calm, mature reef aquarium. Completely reef-safe with all corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityThe male Scribbled Pipefish carries fertilized eggs on his ventral surface in a brood area. Pairs form bonds and engage in courtship displays involving parallel swimming before egg transfer. Gestation lasts approximately 2 to 3 weeks. Fully formed miniature pipefish are released and can feed on copepod nauplii and newly hatched brine shrimp. This species has been bred by dedicated hobbyists in mature home aquarium systems.
