Bodianus neilli
Family: Labridae ยท Hogfish
Also known as: Neill's Hogfish, Candy Hogfish, Yellow-Streaked Hogfish
The Dottyback Hogfish is one of the smallest and most endearing members of the Bodianus genus, reaching a maximum size of just 8 inches. Its common name reflects its superficial resemblance to dottyback fish, with a streamlined body shape and attractive coloration that includes warm reddish-orange tones. This compact species is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking the personality of a hogfish in a smaller package.
In the wild, this species inhabits coral reefs and rubble areas in the Western Pacific, typically at moderate depths. It forages among rocks and coral for small crustaceans, worms, and other tiny invertebrates. Despite its small size, it displays the characteristic bold personality common to all hogfish, actively patrolling its territory throughout the day.
In captivity, the Dottyback Hogfish is a hardy and adaptable species that thrives in aquariums of 75 gallons or more. It readily accepts frozen and prepared foods, is generally peaceful toward other fish, and adapts quickly to aquarium routines. Its manageable size, peaceful nature, and ease of care make it one of the best hogfish species for beginning marine aquarists.
Feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and benthic invertebrates. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed twice daily. May help control bristle worm and flatworm populations.
The Dottyback Hogfish is peaceful and compatible with most community reef fish including clownfish, tangs, gobies, and blennies. It rarely bothers corals or most invertebrates, making it one of the most reef-safe hogfish species available.
Check CompatibilityLike all Bodianus species, the Dottyback Hogfish is a protogynous hermaphrodite. Captive breeding has not been achieved. All specimens are wild-caught from Western Pacific reefs.
