Eviota nigriventris
Family: Gobiidae ยท Gobies
Also known as: Red Neon Pygmy Goby, Black-Bellied Dwarfgoby, Red Neon Dwarfgoby
The Red Neon Eviota is a strikingly beautiful micro-goby that packs remarkable color into its tiny 0.8-inch frame. Its semi-translucent body is suffused with brilliant red-orange pigmentation, accented by a dark belly (from which its scientific name nigriventris derives) and vivid neon highlights along the head and body. Under quality aquarium lighting, this species glows with an intensity that seems impossible for such a minute creature.
First captive bred by Biota Marine Life, the Red Neon Eviota has become a sought-after species for nano reef enthusiasts. This social species thrives when kept in small groups of three to six individuals, creating a captivating display as they perch on coral branches and rock surfaces, occasionally making short hovering flights through the water column to capture passing micro-organisms. Their communal behavior and brilliant coloration make a group of Red Neon Eviota one of the most visually rewarding stocking choices for a nano reef.
Despite their breathtaking appearance, Red Neon Eviota are delicate fish that require stable water parameters and a reliable supply of micro-sized foods. A mature nano reef with a thriving copepod population and stable chemistry is essential. These gobies have a naturally short lifespan of approximately one to two years, which is typical of the Eviota genus. However, their rapid maturity and frequent spawning behavior can sustain a self-perpetuating colony in a well-maintained tank.
Red Neon Eviota are micro-predators that feed on tiny copepods, amphipods, and zooplankton. In captivity, provide live copepods, frozen cyclops, and baby brine shrimp. A refugium producing live copepods is highly recommended. Their tiny mouths cannot accept standard-sized aquarium foods.
Red Neon Eviota must only be kept with other micro-sized peaceful species. Any fish over 2 inches may eat them. Ideal in species groups or with other Eviota species, sexy shrimp, and micro invertebrates in a dedicated nano reef.
Check CompatibilityRed Neon Eviota mature quickly and spawn frequently when kept in groups. Pairs deposit small clutches of eggs on hard surfaces. Biota Marine Life first achieved commercial captive breeding of this species. Larvae are extremely small and require live rotifers as initial food.
