Yellowfin Damselfish

The Yellowfin Damselfish is an appealing member of the Chrysiptera genus that combines a rich blue body coloration with distinctive bright yellow fins, creating a vivid and attractive contrast. The body displays a deep cobalt to electric blue, while the pectoral, ventral, and anal fins are suffused with warm yellow to golden tones. This blue-and-yellow combination makes the species visually striking and easily distinguished from other blue damselfish. Adults reach about 3 inches in maximum length.

In the wild, Chrysiptera flavipinnis is found across the Western Pacific, from Indonesia and the Philippines to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and northern Australia. It inhabits sheltered reef environments, lagoons, and coastal reef slopes, where it occupies territories among rubble zones, small coral heads, and rocky crevices. Like other Chrysiptera species, it is an omnivorous feeder that consumes algae, zooplankton, and small invertebrates while defending a modest home territory.

In the aquarium, the Yellowfin Damselfish is a hardy and visually rewarding species that offers a beautiful alternative to the more commonly available blue damselfish. Its semi-aggressive temperament is moderate for a Chrysiptera species, falling between the very aggressive Blue Devil and the relatively mild Rolland's Damsel. It is well-suited for community reef tanks of 30 gallons or more, where it can be housed with a range of moderately assertive tankmates. Provide rockwork with crevices for shelter and territory establishment. The species is completely reef-safe and accepts all standard aquarium foods with enthusiasm.
