Chrysiptera brownriggii
Family: Pomacentridae ยท Damselfish
Also known as: Surge Demoiselle, Brownrigg's Damselfish, Surge Zone Damsel
The Surge Damselfish is a tough and adaptable species uniquely specialized for life in the turbulent surge zone of Indo-Pacific reefs. Named for its preferred habitat in the wave-battered shallows, this species displays a predominantly brown to olive-brown body adorned with scattered electric blue spots and markings, particularly prominent on the head and operculum. The blue spotting provides an attractive accent against the earthy base color. Adults reach about 4 inches in length.
In the wild, Chrysiptera brownriggii is one of the most widespread damselfish species, found across the entire Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Hawaii and from southern Japan to Australia. It is uniquely adapted to the high-energy surge zone, a challenging habitat characterized by crashing waves, strong currents, and constantly tumbling water. This extreme environment has shaped the species into one of the hardiest and most stress-tolerant of all marine aquarium fish, capable of withstanding conditions that would overwhelm less robust species. It feeds opportunistically on algae, small invertebrates, and detritus in the turbulent shallows.
In the aquarium, the Surge Damselfish brings its legendary toughness to bear, thriving in virtually any marine setup. Its semi-aggressive temperament is moderate for a damselfish, as its natural habitat involves more open swimming rather than intense territory defense around specific coral heads. This makes it somewhat more amenable to community life than many other damselfish species. A 30-gallon aquarium with good water flow is ideal. Provide rockwork for shelter, and avoid housing with very small or timid species. The species is completely reef-safe and accepts all standard aquarium foods eagerly.
Surge Damselfish are opportunistic omnivores that feed on algae, small invertebrates, and detritus in the wild surge zone. In captivity, they eagerly accept marine flakes, micro-pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. Include algae-based foods such as Spirulina flakes for balanced nutrition. Feed small amounts two to three times daily.
The Surge Damselfish is semi-aggressive but generally more community-friendly than many damselfish species due to its open-water surge zone lifestyle. It coexists well with clownfish, wrasses, tangs, and other moderately assertive community fish. Avoid housing with very small or timid species. Its adaptable nature and moderate territorial behavior make it suitable for a range of community setups. Completely reef-safe with all corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilitySurge Damselfish are substrate spawners that lay adhesive eggs on hard surfaces. The male guards the nest until the eggs hatch in approximately 3-4 days. In the wild, nesting occurs in the surge zone, with males adapting their behavior to the turbulent conditions. Larvae are tiny and pelagic, requiring rotifers and microalgae as first foods. Breeding has been observed in captivity.
