Amphiprion bicinctus
Family: Pomacentridae ยท Clownfish
Also known as: Two-Banded Anemonefish, Red Sea Clownfish, Two-Stripe Clownfish
The Two Band Clownfish is the signature clownfish species of the Red Sea, recognized by its warm orange to yellow-orange body adorned with two distinct white bars, one behind the eye and another mid-body. Unlike the more familiar three-banded clownfish species, the absence of a third bar on the caudal peduncle gives this species a clean, elegant appearance. Some specimens develop a beautiful dark orangish-yellow hue that intensifies with maturity.
In its Red Sea habitat, the Two Band Clownfish associates with several anemone species including Entacmaea quadricolor, Heteractis crispa, and Stichodactyla gigantea. It is a common and conspicuous resident of Red Sea reefs, often found in pairs or small groups clustered around prominent anemones on reef slopes and in lagoons. Its Red Sea origin gives it a slightly different character than Indo-Pacific clownfish, with a reputation for being somewhat hardier and more adaptable.
The Two Band Clownfish is an excellent aquarium species that is hardy, beginner-friendly, and readily available from Red Sea collectors. It accepts all manner of prepared and frozen foods and thrives in standard reef aquarium conditions. Its semi-aggressive temperament is manageable, and it coexists well with a variety of community fish. This species has been successfully bred in captivity, and captive-bred specimens are occasionally available, offering a more sustainable option for aquarists.
Two Band Clownfish are omnivores that feed on algae, zooplankton, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept marine pellets, flake food, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and vitamin-enriched preparations. Feed two to three times daily in small portions.
The Two Band Clownfish is semi-aggressive and territorial around its host anemone but compatible with most community reef fish. Should not be housed with other clownfish species. A hardy and reliable community fish that adapts well to a variety of tankmate combinations.
Check CompatibilityTwo Band Clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites that breed readily in captivity. Mated pairs spawn on flat surfaces every 2-3 weeks. Eggs hatch in 7-10 days. Larvae require rotifers as first foods. Captive breeding is well-documented with good success rates.
