Amphiprion omanensis
Family: Pomacentridae ยท Clownfish
Also known as: Oman Anemonefish, Arabian Clownfish
The Oman Clownfish is a rare and geographically restricted anemonefish found exclusively along the coastline of Oman in the Arabian Sea. It is one of the most range-limited clownfish species in the world, occurring only in the waters between the Gulf of Oman and the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The body displays a warm brown to orange-brown coloration with two white vertical bars, one behind the eye and one at mid-body. The fins are often dusky brown with subtle orange highlights. While superficially similar to several other two-barred clownfish species, its extreme geographic isolation has established it as a distinct species.
In the wild, the Oman Clownfish inhabits rocky reef environments along the Omani coast, where it hosts with Bubble Tip Anemones (Entacmaea quadricolor). The waters of Oman present challenging conditions for marine life, with seasonal upwelling events that bring cooler, nutrient-rich water and significant temperature fluctuations. The Oman Clownfish has adapted to these conditions, making it more tolerant of temperature variation than many tropical clownfish species. Its restricted range and the difficulty of collecting from Omani waters make it one of the least commonly seen clownfish in the aquarium trade.
The Oman Clownfish requires intermediate-level care primarily due to its rarity and the limited information available on its long-term captive requirements. It is hardy once established and accepts prepared foods readily. Like most clownfish of similar size, it is semi-aggressive and territorial, particularly around its host anemone. Captive-bred specimens are the best choice when available, as they acclimate more readily to aquarium conditions.
The Oman Clownfish is an omnivore that accepts a wide range of prepared aquarium foods including marine pellets, flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. A varied diet incorporating both meaty and algae-based foods promotes optimal health and coloration. Vitamin-enriched preparations are recommended to support the immune system. Feed two to three times daily in small portions.
The Oman Clownfish is semi-aggressive and territorial, particularly mature females defending their host or nesting area. Should not be kept with other clownfish species. Compatible with tangs, wrasses, larger gobies, angelfish, and other moderately assertive community reef fish. May bully smaller, passive species. Completely reef-safe with all corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityThe Oman Clownfish can be bred in captivity following standard clownfish breeding protocols. Mated pairs spawn on flat surfaces near their chosen host or territory. The male guards the eggs, which hatch in 7-10 days depending on temperature. Larvae require rotifers as first food. Captive breeding of this species is important due to its extremely limited natural range. Captive-bred specimens are occasionally available from specialist breeders.
