Ostorhinchus luteus
Family: Apogonidae ยท Cardinalfish
Also known as: Golden Cardinalfish, Luteus Cardinalfish, Yellow Cardinal
The Yellow Cardinalfish is a striking and somewhat rare species in the aquarium trade, prized for its bright golden-yellow coloration that covers the entire body. This vivid yellow hue is unusual among cardinalfish, which tend toward more subdued pinkish, silver, or brown tones. The intensity of the yellow coloration can vary from a soft lemon to a deep golden amber depending on diet, lighting, and the individual specimen, but healthy specimens invariably display an eye-catching warmth.
This species is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, though it is less commonly encountered than many of its relatives. It inhabits sheltered reef environments where it forms small groups among coral branches and rocky overhangs. Its relative rarity in the wild and in the aquarium trade adds to its appeal for collectors seeking unusual and distinctive species.
Despite its exotic appearance and relative rarity, the Yellow Cardinalfish is no more difficult to care for than common cardinalfish species. It is hardy, peaceful, and readily accepts prepared foods in captivity. When available, it makes a spectacular addition to reef aquariums, providing a splash of vibrant yellow that complements the blues and greens typical of reef setups. Its schooling behavior is best appreciated when multiple specimens can be kept together.
Yellow Cardinalfish are carnivores that feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, they accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and high-quality marine pellets. A varied, nutrient-rich diet helps maintain their vibrant yellow coloration. Feed two to three times daily.
The Yellow Cardinalfish is peaceful and compatible with virtually all reef community fish. It does well alongside clownfish, gobies, blennies, dartfish, wrasses, and other cardinalfish. Its gentle nature means it should not be housed with aggressive fish that may bully it. Groups coexist harmoniously.
Check CompatibilityYellow Cardinalfish are paternal mouthbrooders. Males incubate fertilized eggs in their mouths for approximately 7-10 days. Captive breeding is possible but limited by the species' relative rarity in the hobby. Fry require small live foods such as rotifers and newly hatched brine shrimp.
