Apogon notatus
Family: Apogonidae ยท Cardinalfish
Also known as: Ocellated Cardinalfish, Spotted Cardinalfish, Blackspot Cardinalfish
The Ocellate Cardinalfish is a subtle yet captivating species recognized by its prominent black ocellus (eye-like spot) near the base of its caudal peduncle. This distinctive marking gives the fish its name and serves as a predator-deterring false eye in the wild. The body is typically pinkish-silver with translucent fins, creating an understated elegance that appeals to aquarists who appreciate nuanced beauty over flashy coloration.
Like most cardinalfish, the Ocellate Cardinalfish is a nocturnal species that becomes most active during twilight and nighttime hours. During the day, it tends to hover quietly among rockwork, coral branches, or other shelter. In the aquarium, it quickly adapts to daytime feeding and becomes a reliable, visible member of the community. It is best kept in small groups of three to five individuals, where it displays natural schooling behavior.
This species is an excellent choice for reef aquariums of all sizes. Its peaceful disposition, modest space requirements, and willingness to accept prepared foods make it a superb beginner fish. As a paternal mouthbrooder, males will incubate eggs in their mouths, providing fascinating breeding behavior for observant aquarists.
Ocellate Cardinalfish are carnivores that feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and finely chopped seafood. They will also learn to eat high-quality marine pellets. Feed two to three times daily in small portions.
The Ocellate Cardinalfish is extremely peaceful and compatible with virtually all reef community fish. It thrives alongside clownfish, gobies, blennies, and other cardinalfish. Its slow-moving, non-aggressive nature means it should not be housed with large or aggressive fish that may bully it. Groups generally coexist well with minimal intraspecific aggression.
Check CompatibilityOcellate Cardinalfish are paternal mouthbrooders. Males incubate eggs in their mouths for approximately 7-10 days. Pairs form within groups and may spawn regularly once established. Fry require small live foods such as rotifers and newly hatched brine shrimp for the first few weeks.
