Sphaeramia orbicularis
Family: Apogonidae ยท Cardinalfish
Also known as: Orbic Cardinalfish, Polkadot Cardinalfish, Round Cardinalfish
The Orbiculate Cardinalfish is a close relative of the popular Pajama Cardinalfish, sharing a similar body shape and the distinctive divided color pattern that makes the Sphaeramia genus so recognizable. Its body is characterized by a rounded, somewhat compressed shape with a silvery-olive base coloration marked by darker spotting on the posterior half. A dark vertical band separates the anterior and posterior halves of the body, much like its pajama cousin.
This species is commonly found in sheltered bays, lagoons, and mangrove areas throughout the Indo-Pacific, often forming small groups among branching corals and sea grass beds. In the aquarium, it retains its natural schooling tendencies and is best appreciated when kept in groups of three to five individuals. Its calm demeanor and hovering swimming style create a relaxing, natural display.
The Orbiculate Cardinalfish is an extremely hardy and forgiving species, making it one of the best choices for beginning marine aquarists. It tolerates minor fluctuations in water quality, readily accepts a variety of prepared foods, and rarely shows aggression toward tankmates. Its combination of interesting appearance, ease of care, and peaceful temperament has earned it a loyal following in the hobby.
Orbiculate Cardinalfish are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and high-quality marine pellets and flakes. Feed two to three times daily with appropriately sized portions.
The Orbiculate Cardinalfish is one of the most peaceful marine fish available. It coexists well with virtually all reef community species including clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses, and other cardinalfish. Avoid housing with large predatory fish that may view it as prey. Intraspecific aggression is minimal even in small groups.
Check CompatibilityOrbiculate Cardinalfish are paternal mouthbrooders similar to their Pajama Cardinalfish relatives. Males incubate eggs in their mouths for approximately 7-10 days. Breeding pairs form within groups and may spawn regularly in captivity. Fry require small live foods such as rotifers initially, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp.
