Rhabdamia gracilis
Family: Apogonidae ยท Cardinalfish
Also known as: Slender Cardinalfish, Graceful Cardinalfish, Glass Cardinalfish
The Transparent Cardinalfish is one of the most ethereal and visually unique species in the marine aquarium hobby. As its name suggests, this fish is nearly completely transparent, with its internal organs, spine, and other structures clearly visible through its glass-like body. Only the eyes, a faint silvery shimmer along the flanks, and occasional subtle pigmentation break the transparency, creating a ghost-like appearance that captivates observers.
In the wild, the Transparent Cardinalfish forms large schools in the open water column above reef structures throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Its transparency serves as highly effective camouflage in open water, where there is no physical structure to hide behind. Schools of these fish can appear and disappear as they shift angles relative to the light, creating an almost magical visual effect.
While more delicate than many other cardinalfish species, the Transparent Cardinalfish can thrive in well-maintained aquariums with stable water parameters. It requires more careful attention to water quality and feeding than its hardier relatives, placing it at an intermediate care level. When kept in groups, these fish create a mesmerizing display that is unlike anything else in the marine aquarium hobby.
Transparent Cardinalfish are carnivores that feed primarily on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, they accept frozen cyclops, enriched baby brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely crushed marine pellets. They may be slow to accept prepared foods initially and benefit from live enriched brine shrimp during acclimation. Feed two to three times daily with small, appropriately sized food items.
The Transparent Cardinalfish is extremely peaceful but also quite delicate. It should only be housed with other gentle, non-aggressive species such as small gobies, blennies, dartfish, and other cardinalfish. Avoid any aggressive, fast-moving, or large tankmates that could stress or outcompete these delicate fish for food.
Check CompatibilityTransparent Cardinalfish are paternal mouthbrooders like other members of their family. Males incubate eggs in their mouths until hatching. Breeding in captivity is challenging due to the species' delicate nature and the extremely small size of the fry, which require the finest live foods such as rotifers and copepod nauplii.
