Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Rhomboid Fairy Wrasse, Diamond Fairy Wrasse, Diamond-Tail Fairy Wrasse
The Rhomboid Fairy Wrasse is a striking and somewhat uncommon fairy wrasse recognized by the distinctive diamond or rhomboid-shaped pattern visible on its body and tail. Males display a rich blend of red to deep pink across the body, with each scale outlined in a manner that creates a tessellated diamond-like pattern. The fins are edged in vivid blue-violet, and during courtship displays, the entire body seems to pulse with intensified color as the male flares every fin to maximum extension. Females are more conservatively colored in pinkish tones but retain the characteristic scaled patterning.
In the wild, Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis inhabits outer reef slopes and drop-offs in the western Pacific, typically at depths of 20 to 50 meters. It is found in areas with moderate current, where it hovers above rubble and hard coral substrate to feed on passing zooplankton. Males maintain small harems and are most active during the late afternoon hours when courtship displays reach their peak. The species' relatively deep natural habitat contributes to its less frequent availability in the aquarium trade.
In the aquarium, the Rhomboid Fairy Wrasse proves to be a hardy and adaptable species once properly acclimated. Specimens from deeper collection depths may initially prefer lower light intensity but will adjust over time. It is completely reef-safe and peaceful, making it an excellent addition to any mixed reef community. As with all Cirrhilabrus wrasses, a sealed aquarium top is non-negotiable to prevent escape. Regular feedings of meaty frozen foods multiple times per day will maintain this fish in prime condition.
Rhomboid Fairy Wrasses are carnivores that feed on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, provide frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and high-quality marine pellets. They are generally enthusiastic feeders that accept most offered foods readily. Feed two to three times daily in small portions for best health and coloration.
The Rhomboid Fairy Wrasse is peaceful toward all tankmates and completely reef-safe. Males may display competitively toward other fairy wrasse species, so keep only one Cirrhilabrus species per tank unless the system is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, anthias, and other peaceful reef fish.
Check CompatibilityRhomboid Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, with the dominant female capable of transitioning to male. Males perform courtship displays at dusk, rapidly flashing their diamond-patterned coloration while rising in the water column. Spawning produces pelagic eggs that are released into the current. Captive breeding remains unachieved due to the tiny larval size and specialized food requirements of the newly hatched fry.
