Cirrhilabrus lineatus
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Lineatus Fairy Wrasse, Lined Fairy Wrasse, Purple-Lined Fairy Wrasse
The Lineatus Fairy Wrasse is one of the most visually arresting members of the Cirrhilabrus genus, featuring a striking pattern of vivid red to magenta horizontal lines running across a blue to purple body. Males are particularly spectacular, with their flanks painted in alternating bands of electric red and deep blue-violet that intensify dramatically during courtship displays. The dorsal and anal fins are adorned with splashes of red and blue, creating an almost painted appearance. Females are more subdued with a pinkish-red body and less defined patterning.
In the wild, Cirrhilabrus lineatus is found along the outer reef slopes and lagoons of the western Pacific, particularly around the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, and the Coral Sea. It typically inhabits depths of 10 to 40 meters where it forms loose aggregations above rubble and coral substrate, picking zooplankton from the water column. Males are territorial and will display vigorously toward rivals, flaring their striking lined pattern to full effect.
In the home aquarium, the Lineatus Fairy Wrasse is a hardy and adaptable species that makes an outstanding display fish. It is completely reef-safe and peaceful toward most tankmates, though males may show aggression toward other fairy wrasse species. A well-sealed aquarium is essential, as this species is prone to jumping. Provide moderate water flow, ample open swimming space, and live rock for shelter. Regular feedings of meaty frozen foods will keep this wrasse in peak condition and maximize its extraordinary coloration.
Lineatus Fairy Wrasses are carnivores that feed on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and quality marine pellets. Occasional offerings of finely chopped seafood are also appreciated. Feed two to three times daily in small portions for optimal health and coloration.
The Lineatus Fairy Wrasse is peaceful toward most tankmates and completely reef-safe. Males may be aggressive toward other Cirrhilabrus species, so only one fairy wrasse species should be kept per tank unless the system is very large. It pairs well with clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, anthias, and other peaceful reef fish.
Check CompatibilityLineatus Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning the dominant female in a group can transition to a male. Males perform vigorous courtship displays at dusk, showcasing their vivid red-lined pattern while rising rapidly in the water column. Spawning involves the release of pelagic eggs. Captive breeding has not been achieved due to the tiny larval size and specialized dietary requirements.
