Cirrhilabrus jordani
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Flame Fairy Wrasse, Jordan's Fairy Wrasse, Hawaiian Flame Wrasse
The Flame Fairy Wrasse is widely considered one of the most breathtaking fairy wrasses in the marine aquarium hobby, and for good reason. Males exhibit a fiery red to deep crimson body that seems to glow under reef lighting, accented with subtle yellow highlights along the ventral region and electric blue streaks near the eye and gill plate. The dorsal fin features a vivid red sail-like extension that the male flares dramatically during courtship. Females display a more subdued orange-red coloration but remain attractive in their own right.
This species is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll, making it a true rarity in the marine aquarium trade. In the wild, it inhabits deep reef slopes and rubble zones at depths typically ranging from 20 to 60 meters, where it forms loose aggregations above the substrate while feeding on passing zooplankton. The deep-water origin of most collected specimens means they require careful decompression during collection, which contributes to the species' higher price point in the hobby.
In the aquarium, the Flame Fairy Wrasse is surprisingly hardy once properly acclimated, though its deep-water origins mean it may initially prefer subdued lighting. It is completely reef-safe and peaceful, making it an ideal centerpiece fish for a mixed reef aquarium. A secure lid is mandatory, as this species will jump if startled. Providing multiple daily feedings of meaty frozen foods and maintaining stable water parameters will ensure this Hawaiian gem thrives and displays its most spectacular coloration.
Flame Fairy Wrasses are carnivores that primarily feed on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and finely chopped seafood. High-quality marine pellets are also accepted by most specimens. Feed multiple small portions throughout the day to maintain optimal health and coloration.
The Flame Fairy Wrasse is peaceful toward all tankmates and completely reef-safe. Males may spar with other fairy wrasse species, so only one Cirrhilabrus species should be housed per tank unless the aquarium is quite large. It makes an excellent community fish alongside clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, and other peaceful species.
Check CompatibilityFlame Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. The dominant female within a group can transition into a male. Males perform elaborate courtship dances at dusk, flashing their brilliant red coloration and flaring fins before releasing pelagic eggs. Captive breeding has not been accomplished due to the extremely small larval size and specialized feeding requirements of the fry.
