Sargocentron violaceum
Family: Holocentridae ยท Squirrelfish & Soldierfish
Also known as: Violet Soldierfish, Purple Squirrelfish
The Violet Squirrelfish is a uniquely colored species from the Western Pacific, distinguished by its deep violet to reddish-purple body coloration that sets it apart from the predominantly red members of its family. White to pale markings accent the scale edges, creating a subtle striped effect. Its large, dark eyes are typical of the nocturnal squirrelfish family.
This species inhabits coral reefs, rocky outcroppings, and rubble zones across the Western Pacific. During the day, it shelters in caves, crevices, and under coral heads, emerging at dusk to forage for small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates along the reef surface.
The Violet Squirrelfish is beginner-friendly and adapts well to aquarium conditions. Its unusual purple coloration makes it a standout in any marine tank, and its peaceful disposition allows it to coexist with a wide variety of community tankmates. It is fully reef-safe and will not bother corals or sessile invertebrates.
Readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and marine carnivore pellets. Feed in the evening initially to match its natural activity pattern. Most specimens will learn to feed during daylight hours with time.
Very peaceful and compatible with most community fish. May be shy initially but becomes bolder with time. Can be kept with other peaceful squirrelfish species.
Check CompatibilityViolet Squirrelfish have not been bred in home aquaria. They are pelagic spawners with a planktonic larval stage that is extremely difficult to rear in captivity.
