Sargocentron caudimaculatum
Family: Holocentridae ยท Squirrelfish & Soldierfish
Also known as: Silverspot Squirrelfish, Whitetail Squirrelfish
The Tailspot Squirrelfish is a widely distributed Indo-Pacific species easily identified by the conspicuous white or silvery spot at the base of its caudal fin. Its body is a vivid red with lighter horizontal streaks along the scale rows, and its large eyes are well adapted for its nocturnal lifestyle. This medium-sized squirrelfish reaches about 10 inches in length.
Found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to Polynesia, this species inhabits reef slopes, lagoons, and outer reef walls. During the day it shelters in caves and under coral ledges, often in small aggregations. At night it disperses to feed on small crustaceans, polychaete worms, and zooplankton.
The Tailspot Squirrelfish is a beginner-friendly species that adapts well to aquarium life. It feeds readily on prepared foods, is reef-safe, and its peaceful nature makes it suitable for community tanks. Its striking red coloration and distinctive tail marking make it a visually appealing addition to any marine setup.
Feed a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped krill, and marine carnivore pellets. Feeds most actively in the evening but will learn to accept daytime feedings. Feed 1-2 times daily.
Peaceful with most tankmates of similar or larger size. Can be kept with other peaceful squirrelfish species in adequately sized tanks. May eat very small shrimp.
Check CompatibilityTailspot Squirrelfish have not been bred in captivity. They are pelagic spawners that release eggs into the water column during nighttime hours.
