Sargocentron punctatissimum
Family: Holocentridae ยท Squirrelfish & Soldierfish
Also known as: Speckled Squirrelfish, Finespotted Squirrelfish
The Peppered Squirrelfish is a small, beautifully marked species found across the Indo-Pacific. Its reddish body is covered in a fine speckling of tiny dark spots that give it its distinctive peppered appearance. Large, dark eyes dominate the head, a hallmark of this nocturnal family. It typically inhabits shallow reef areas, tide pools, and rubble zones.
This species is one of the more beginner-friendly squirrelfish due to its small adult size, peaceful disposition, and willingness to accept prepared foods. It adapts well to aquarium life and quickly learns to associate its keeper with feeding time, often emerging from hiding earlier than other nocturnal species.
The Peppered Squirrelfish is an excellent choice for community reef tanks where its red coloration adds a warm accent. It will not bother corals or most invertebrates, though very small ornamental shrimp may be at risk. Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and overhangs for daytime retreats.
Accepts a wide variety of meaty frozen and prepared foods including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed once or twice daily, preferably in the evening.
Very peaceful and suitable for community tanks. May be intimidated by large or aggressive tankmates. Can be kept in small groups in larger systems.
Check CompatibilityPeppered Squirrelfish have not been bred in home aquaria. They are pelagic spawners with planktonic larvae that are difficult to rear.
