Sargocentron cornutum
Family: Holocentridae ยท Squirrelfish & Soldierfish
Also known as: Threespot Squirrelfish, Horned Squirrelfish
The Speckled Squirrelfish, also known as the Threespot Squirrelfish, is a compact and colorful species from the Western Pacific. Its red to pinkish body features scattered speckled markings and three characteristic dark spots along its dorsal profile. Like all squirrelfish, it has large, dark eyes adapted for nocturnal vision and preopercular spines for defense.
This species inhabits shallow coral reefs and rocky outcroppings, often found in small groups sheltering in crevices during the day. It emerges at night to forage for small crustaceans and worms along the reef surface. Its relatively small adult size of around 7 inches makes it well-suited to moderate-sized aquarium systems.
The Speckled Squirrelfish is considered one of the easier squirrelfish to maintain in captivity. It accepts prepared foods readily, adapts quickly to aquarium conditions, and its peaceful temperament makes it compatible with a wide range of community tank inhabitants. It is fully reef-safe and will not harm corals or most invertebrates.
Readily accepts a variety of prepared and frozen foods including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, marine pellets, and finely chopped seafood. Feed once or twice daily, preferably in the evening initially.
Peaceful and well-suited to community reef tanks. May be shy around larger or more aggressive species. Can be kept in pairs or small groups in larger tanks.
Check CompatibilitySpeckled Squirrelfish have not been bred in home aquaria. As pelagic spawners, their larvae undergo a planktonic phase that is very difficult to replicate.
