Myripristis murdjan
Family: Holocentridae ยท Squirrelfish & Soldierfish
Also known as: Crimson Soldierfish, Red Soldierfish, Big-Scale Soldierfish
The Pinecone Soldierfish is a large, strikingly beautiful species found throughout the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea. Its body is a deep crimson red with large, prominently edged scales that give it a pinecone-like texture, hence the common name. The enormous dark eyes are a defining feature, perfectly adapted for its nocturnal lifestyle on the reef.
In the wild, this species forms loose aggregations in caves, under ledges, and along reef walls during the day. At night, these groups disperse to hunt zooplankton and small benthic invertebrates across the reef flat. This schooling tendency makes it an impressive display fish when kept in groups.
The Pinecone Soldierfish adapts well to aquarium life with moderate care requirements. It is reef-safe and peaceful toward most tankmates, though it may consume very small shrimp. A larger tank is recommended due to its adult size of nearly 12 inches, and multiple hiding spots should be provided for daytime comfort.
Feed a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped krill, silversides, and quality marine pellets. Feeds most eagerly in dim light or evening hours. Will eventually learn to feed during the day.
Peaceful and social species that does well with other non-aggressive fish. Best kept in groups. May consume very small ornamental shrimp.
Check CompatibilityPinecone Soldierfish have not been bred in home aquaria. They are pelagic spawners with a planktonic larval stage that is very difficult to replicate in captivity.
