Myripristis jacobus
Family: Holocentridae Β· Squirrelfish & Soldierfish
Also known as: Blackbar Soldier, Jacobus Soldierfish
The Blackbar Soldierfish is a handsome Caribbean species easily identified by the prominent black bar located directly behind the gill cover. Its body is a deep reddish-orange with large, expressive eyes typical of the soldierfish subfamily. This nocturnal species is commonly found on reef walls and in cave overhangs throughout the tropical western Atlantic.
In the aquarium, this soldierfish is a relatively hardy and peaceful addition that adapts well to captive conditions once properly acclimated. It prefers dimly lit areas and will often hide during peak lighting hours, becoming more active at dusk and when the lights are off. Providing caves, overhangs, and other dark retreats is essential for its comfort.
The Blackbar Soldierfish does well in a fish-only or reef aquarium with appropriately sized tankmates. It is reef-safe and will not bother corals or sessile invertebrates, though it may consume very small ornamental shrimp.
Feed a variety of meaty frozen foods including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality pellets. Best fed in the evening when the fish is most active. Will readily accept most prepared carnivore foods.
Peaceful with most tankmates of similar size. May be shy if housed with overly boisterous species. Can be kept with conspecifics in larger tanks.
Check CompatibilityBlackbar Soldierfish have not been successfully bred in home aquaria. They are pelagic spawners that release eggs and sperm into the water column.
