Urobatis jamaicensis
Family: Urotrygonidae ยท Rays & Stingrays
Also known as: Jamaican Round Stingray, Yellow Round Ray
The Yellow Stingray is a small, attractively patterned Caribbean ray with a nearly circular disc covered in a beautiful mosaic of dark brown spots and vermiculations over a golden-yellow to greenish background. Found on sandy and rubble bottoms throughout the Caribbean and western Atlantic, it is one of the smaller ray species encountered in the aquarium trade.
Its compact size makes it one of the more feasible rays for dedicated home aquarists, though it still demands expert-level care. A spacious tank with a deep, fine sand bed is essential, as this species spends much of its time buried with only its eyes exposed. The venomous tail barb, while smaller than those of larger rays, still requires careful handling.
Yellow Stingrays can become quite personable in captivity, learning to recognize their keeper and actively approaching at feeding time. Success depends on maintaining pristine water quality, providing appropriate foods, and minimizing stress from aggressive tankmates.
Feed small meaty foods including chopped shrimp, mysid shrimp, clam strips, and small silversides. Place food directly on the sand near the ray. Feed 2-3 small meals daily rather than one large feeding.
Peaceful and undemanding toward tankmates that are too large to eat. Avoid housing with aggressive bottom-dwellers or species that may harass the ray.
Check CompatibilityThis aplacental viviparous species has been bred in some public aquariums. Females give birth to 1-4 pups after a gestation of approximately 5-6 months.
