Pomacanthus xanthometopon
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Large Angelfish
Also known as: Yellowface Angelfish, Yellowmask Angelfish, Blueface Angelfish
The Blue-Faced Angelfish is widely regarded as one of the most visually stunning large angelfish in the marine aquarium hobby. Adults display a spectacular combination of a bright yellow mask that covers the face and forehead, contrasted by a vivid deep blue face below and behind the eyes. The body features intricate blue and yellow scale patterns that create a mesmerizing mosaic effect, while the dorsal and anal fins are edged in brilliant blue. This extraordinary coloration makes the Blue-Faced Angelfish a true showpiece.
In the wild, this species inhabits lagoon and outer reef slopes at depths of 15 to 80 feet, where it is typically found near caves and overhangs in areas with rich coral growth and abundant sponge communities. Blue-Faced Angelfish are usually encountered singly or in pairs, patrolling territories along the reef face. They feed primarily on sponges, tunicates, and algae in their natural habitat.
Reaching up to 15 inches in captivity, the Blue-Faced Angelfish requires a spacious aquarium of at least 200 gallons with extensive live rock for grazing and shelter. It is not considered reef-safe due to its strong tendency to consume coral polyps, sponges, and clam mantles. While initially shy during acclimation, this species typically becomes bold and personable once established, often approaching the glass to greet its keeper. It adapts well to captive life and can be a long-lived, rewarding pet for the dedicated marine aquarist.
Blue-Faced Angelfish are omnivores with a strong preference for sponge-based foods. Offer high-quality angelfish preparations containing marine sponge, Spirulina-enriched pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, nori seaweed, and finely chopped seafood. Include fresh marine sponge when available to support optimal health and coloration.
Blue-Faced Angelfish can be territorial toward other large angelfish and similarly shaped species. Best housed as the only large angel in the system. Compatible with tangs, large wrasses, and other robust community fish that are not overly aggressive.
Check CompatibilityBlue-Faced Angelfish are pelagic spawners that form pairs during twilight spawning ascents. Captive breeding has not been achieved due to the extended pelagic larval phase and large adult size requirements. All aquarium specimens are wild-caught.
