Holacanthus clarionensis
Family: Pomacanthidae Β· Large Angelfish
Also known as: Clarion Angelfish, Revillagigedo Angelfish
The Clarion Angel is one of the most coveted and expensive angelfish in the marine aquarium hobby, commanding prices that can exceed several thousand dollars for a single specimen. Endemic to the remote Revillagigedo Islands and nearby Clipperton Island off the Pacific coast of Mexico, this species displays a breathtaking bright orange body with vivid electric blue stripes on the head, gill cover, and along the dorsal and anal fins. The intensity of its coloration is unmatched among marine angelfish.
For many years, the Clarion Angel was virtually unobtainable due to strict Mexican fishing regulations protecting the Revillagigedo archipelago. Occasional specimens that appeared in the trade commanded astronomical prices. In recent years, captive-bred Clarion Angels have become available through dedicated breeding programs, making the species slightly more accessible though still extremely expensive. Captive-bred specimens are generally healthier, better adapted to aquarium life, and more ethically sourced.
Despite its rarity and high price, the Clarion Angel is actually a relatively hardy species once established. It adapts well to aquarium foods and is less shy than many other rare angelfish. A 125-gallon aquarium is the minimum recommended size. Like most large angelfish, it is not considered reef-safe and will nip at coral polyps and clam mantles. Its semi-aggressive temperament makes it manageable in community fish-only setups with appropriately sized tankmates.
Clarion Angels are omnivores that feed on sponges, algae, tunicates, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer high-quality angelfish preparations containing marine sponge, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, Spirulina, nori seaweed, and finely chopped seafood. Feed two to three times daily.
The Clarion Angel is semi-aggressive and may show territorial behavior toward other angelfish. Only one large angelfish species per tank is recommended unless the system is exceptionally large. It coexists well with tangs, wrasses, and other robust community fish. Not reef-safe. Given its extreme value, choose tankmates carefully to minimize stress and injury risk.
Check CompatibilityThe Clarion Angel has been successfully bred in captivity by dedicated commercial breeding programs, making it one of the few rare large angelfish available as captive-bred specimens. Breeding requires paired adults in large systems, and larval rearing is technically challenging. Captive-bred juveniles are periodically available in the trade at premium prices.
