Pomacanthus asfur
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Large Angelfish
Also known as: Arabian Angelfish, Crescent Angelfish
The Asfur Angelfish is one of the most highly prized and visually stunning large angelfish available in the marine aquarium trade. Its deep royal blue body is adorned with a bold, sweeping crescent of bright yellow that extends from the mid-body down to the caudal fin, creating an unmistakable and breathtaking display. The vivid contrast between the rich blue and vibrant yellow makes the Asfur Angelfish one of the most photographed and coveted species among serious marine aquarists.
Native primarily to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean, this species inhabits coral-rich reefs and rocky outcroppings where it grazes on sponges, tunicates, and algae. In the wild, Asfur Angelfish are typically encountered in pairs or small harems along steep reef walls and drop-offs at moderate depths. Their limited geographic range contributes to their higher price point and desirability in the hobby.
Due to its large adult size of up to 16 inches and territorial nature, the Asfur Angelfish requires a spacious aquarium of at least 200 gallons with ample live rock for grazing and shelter. This species is not considered reef-safe, as it will readily consume coral polyps, sponges, and clam mantles. It can be aggressive toward other large angelfish and similarly shaped fish, so careful tankmate selection is essential. Despite its advanced care requirements, the Asfur Angelfish rewards dedicated aquarists with bold personality and unmatched visual impact.
Asfur Angelfish are omnivores that require a varied diet including marine sponge-based angelfish preparations, Spirulina-enriched foods, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and nori seaweed. Supplement with finely chopped seafood and fresh marine sponge when available. Feed two to three times daily to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Asfur Angelfish can be territorial toward other large angelfish and similarly shaped species. Best kept as the only large angel in the system unless the tank exceeds 300 gallons. Generally compatible with tangs, wrasses, groupers, and other robust community fish.
Check CompatibilityAsfur Angelfish are pelagic spawners that release eggs and sperm into the water column at dusk. Captive breeding has not been achieved due to the extended larval phase and large adult size. All aquarium specimens are wild-caught from the Red Sea region.
