Himantura jenkinsii
Family: Dasyatidae ยท Rays & Stingrays
Also known as: Jenkins' Whipray, Pointed-Nose Stingray
The Black Diamond Stingray is a massive Indo-Pacific ray that can reach disc widths of over six feet, making it one of the largest stingrays encountered in the aquarium trade. Its dorsal surface features a dark brown to black coloration with a distinctive diamond-shaped body and a very long, whip-like tail armed with a venomous barb.
Due to its enormous adult size, this species is strictly a candidate for public aquariums or exceptionally large private installations. A tank of at least 1,000 gallons is the absolute minimum, and even this may prove insufficient as the animal matures. The tank must have a deep sand bed, gentle water flow, and no sharp objects.
Only the most experienced elasmobranch keepers should consider this species. It requires pristine water quality maintained through industrial-grade filtration systems and frequent water changes. Feeding must be generous and varied to support its rapid growth.
Requires large quantities of fresh and frozen meaty foods including whole fish, shrimp, squid, and clams. Feed daily with portions appropriate to the ray's size. Vitamin supplements are essential for long-term health.
Peaceful but will consume any fish or invertebrate small enough to eat. Only house with similarly large, non-aggressive species.
Check CompatibilityBreeding has not been documented in captivity. This species is ovoviviparous and would require an enormous dedicated breeding system.
