Urobatis maculatus
Family: Urotrygonidae ยท Rays & Stingrays
Also known as: Spotted Round Ray, Cortez Stingray
The Cortez Round Stingray is a small, attractively patterned ray native to the Eastern Pacific, primarily found in the Gulf of California and along the Mexican coast. Its nearly circular disc features a distinctive spotted pattern of dark brown markings over a lighter tan or sandy base. The short tail bears a venomous barb, typical of the round ray family.
This compact ray is one of the more manageable species for experienced aquarists, thanks to its relatively small adult size. It still requires a spacious tank with ample floor space, a deep sand bed, and excellent water quality. The round body shape means it needs unobstructed open areas to move freely.
As with all rays, this species is strictly for expert keepers. It requires careful acclimation, consistent feeding schedules, and meticulous water quality management. The venomous tail barb demands respect during all tank maintenance activities.
Feed small meaty foods including chopped shrimp, mysid shrimp, clam, and squid pieces. Place food directly on the sand bed. Feed 2-3 times daily in small portions appropriate to the ray's size.
Peaceful toward tankmates too large to eat. Best housed with calm mid-water and upper-water species that will not outcompete it for food.
Check CompatibilityThis aplacental viviparous species has not been bred in home aquaria. Captive breeding would require multiple specimens in a very large, dedicated system.
