Pseudochromis steenei
Family: Pseudochromidae ยท Dottybacks
Also known as: Steene's Pseudochromis, Orange Dottyback
Steene's Dottyback is a gorgeous species that displays a vivid orange to reddish-orange body accented by a bold dark streak running from the snout through the eye and along the upper body. This striking color pattern makes it one of the most visually impressive dottybacks available, rivaling even the popular Orchid Dottyback in terms of sheer aesthetic appeal. Named after the renowned underwater photographer Roger Steene, this species hails from the reefs of Indonesia.
In its natural habitat, Steene's Dottyback occupies caves and crevices on coral-rich reef walls and slopes. It is a solitary, territorial species that aggressively defends its home range. At up to five inches in length, it is one of the larger dottyback species, which contributes to its ability to dominate smaller tankmates. Its bold personality means it is often one of the most visible and active fish in the aquarium, darting between hiding spots and patrolling its territory throughout the day.
Keeping Steene's Dottyback requires intermediate-level experience due to its aggressive territorial behavior. A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks are preferred to provide adequate space for territory establishment. The aquascape should include numerous caves and overhangs. Despite its aggression toward fish, this species is completely reef-safe and will not disturb corals or large invertebrates. It is an excellent predator of bristleworms and small pest organisms.
Steene's Dottybacks are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans, worms, and tiny fish in the wild. In captivity, they eagerly accept frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, marine pellets, and flake food. They are bold, aggressive feeders. They will hunt and consume bristleworms and other small pest invertebrates. Feed once to twice daily.
Steene's Dottyback is an aggressive territorial species that will dominate smaller, timid fish. Its larger size compared to most dottybacks makes it capable of bullying a wider range of tankmates. Compatible species include tangs, larger wrasses, angelfish, hawkfish, and clownfish. Avoid small gobies, firefish, and other passive species. Never house with other dottybacks. Add last to a community aquarium.
Check CompatibilitySteene's Dottybacks are protogynous hermaphrodites. Males guard egg clutches in caves. Due to the species' aggressive nature and larger size, dedicated breeding setups are recommended. Captive breeding is rare and not well-documented for this species. Pairs must be carefully introduced with visual barriers to prevent the dominant individual from killing the submissive one.
