Pseudochromis melanurus
Family: Pseudochromidae ยท Dottybacks
Also known as: Blacktail Dottyback, Melanurus Pseudochromis
The Melanurus Dottyback is a rare and attractive species characterized by its vibrant yellow body contrasted with a distinctive black tail, a combination that immediately sets it apart from other dottybacks in the aquarium trade. The bright golden-yellow body may show hints of orange near the head and dorsal region, while the sharply demarcated black caudal fin provides a bold finishing accent. This striking color pattern makes it a prized find for collectors and aquarists alike.
In the wild, the Melanurus Dottyback is found in the Western Pacific, primarily around Indonesia and the Philippines. It inhabits reef crevices and rubble zones at moderate depths, where it maintains small territories among the rocks. Like other Pseudochromis species, it is a secretive fish that darts in and out of hiding spots, emerging primarily to feed on passing small invertebrates and zooplankton. Its limited availability in the aquarium trade is partly due to its relatively restricted range and difficulty of collection.
In the home aquarium, the Melanurus Dottyback is hardy and easy to maintain once settled. It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with plenty of rockwork providing caves and crevices. While semi-aggressive, its temperament is manageable in a well-planned community tank with appropriate tankmates. It is completely reef-safe and will actively hunt small bristleworms, providing beneficial pest control. Its rarity in the trade makes it a special addition for dottyback enthusiasts.
The Melanurus Dottyback is a carnivore that feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, it readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, marine pellets, and flake food. It will consume small bristleworms. Feed two to three times daily.
The Melanurus Dottyback is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially in smaller tanks. It may chase similarly sized or similarly shaped fish. Best kept singly with larger or dissimilar tankmates. Compatible with tangs, larger wrasses, clownfish, and other robust community fish.
Check CompatibilityThe Melanurus Dottyback is a protogynous hermaphrodite. Males guard egg clutches in caves. Breeding in captivity is possible but uncommon due to the rarity of the species in the trade. Larvae require rotifers and small live foods.
