Amphiprion akallopisos
Family: Pomacentridae Β· Clownfish
Also known as: Skunk Anemonefish, Nosestripe Clownfish, Whitebacked Anemonefish
The Skunk Clownfish is an elegant and understated member of the clownfish family, distinguished by its peachy-orange body and a single narrow white dorsal stripe that runs from the snout along the entire length of the back to the tail. Unlike the bold barred patterns of most clownfish, this simple stripe gives the Skunk Clownfish a clean, refined appearance that appeals to aquarists seeking something a bit different from the classic clownfish look. It lacks the vertical bars seen on most other Amphiprion species, making it easy to identify at a glance.
Native to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, from the coast of East Africa and Madagascar to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, the Skunk Clownfish is found in shallow lagoons and reef slopes where it associates primarily with Heteractis magnifica (Magnificent Sea Anemone) and Stichodactyla mertensii (Merton's Carpet Anemone). It tends to live in small groups within a single large anemone, with the dominant female being the largest individual. Like all clownfish, it is a protandrous hermaphrodite, with the most dominant male transitioning to female if the breeding female is lost.
The Skunk Clownfish is one of the most peaceful clownfish species, making it an ideal choice for community reef aquariums. It rarely shows aggression toward tankmates, even near its host anemone. This gentle temperament, combined with its hardiness and willingness to accept prepared foods, makes it an excellent beginner fish. However, its docile nature means it should not be housed with aggressive tankmates that might bully it. Captive-bred specimens are increasingly available, and this species breeds readily in home aquariums for those interested in marine fish propagation.
Skunk Clownfish are omnivores that readily accept a variety of prepared foods including high-quality marine pellets, flake food, frozen mysis shrimp, and enriched brine shrimp. They also benefit from occasional algae-based foods and finely chopped seafood. A varied diet with vitamin supplementation helps maintain their warm peachy coloration. Feed two to three times daily in small portions.
The Skunk Clownfish is among the most peaceful clownfish species and is an excellent community reef fish. It rarely shows aggression toward tankmates and can be bullied by more assertive species, so avoid housing with aggressive clownfish, large damselfish, or other domineering fish. Does well with other peaceful community fish such as gobies, blennies, firefish, and chromis. Should not be kept with other clownfish species. Completely reef-safe.
Check CompatibilitySkunk Clownfish can be bred in captivity, though they are slightly less prolific than Ocellaris or Percula clownfish. Mated pairs will spawn on flat surfaces every two to three weeks, with the male tending the eggs until hatching in 8-10 days. Larvae require rotifers as first food, transitioning to baby brine shrimp as they grow. Captive-bred specimens are becoming increasingly available in the hobby.
