Amphiprion allardi
Family: Pomacentridae ยท Clownfish
Also known as: Allard's Anemonefish, Two-barred Anemonefish
Allard's Clownfish is a large and handsome anemonefish native to the coral reefs of East Africa, from Kenya and Tanzania south to Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. It is one of the more imposing clownfish species, with females reaching up to six inches in length. The body displays a rich dark brown to orange-brown coloration, accented by two prominent white vertical bars edged in black. The first bar sits just behind the eye while the second crosses the mid-body. The tail fin is typically white or pale yellow, providing a bright contrast against the darker body.
In the wild, Allard's Clownfish forms symbiotic relationships primarily with Bubble Tip Anemones (Entacmaea quadricolor) and Sebae Anemones (Heteractis crispa). It lives in mated pairs or small groups with a strict social hierarchy dominated by the largest female. The species inhabits relatively shallow reef environments, typically at depths between 2 and 30 meters, and rarely ventures far from its host anemone. Its East African distribution means it is less commonly available in the aquarium trade than Indo-Pacific clownfish species, lending it a certain desirability among collectors.
Allard's Clownfish is a hardy species suitable for beginning aquarists, though its larger size and semi-aggressive temperament require appropriate tank planning. A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended, particularly for a mated pair. While it does not require an anemone in captivity, providing one significantly enhances the display and reduces territorial aggression. It is completely reef-safe and breeds readily in aquariums, making it an excellent choice for hobbyists interested in both display and breeding.
Allard's Clownfish is an enthusiastic omnivore that readily accepts all prepared aquarium foods including marine pellets, flake food, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. It benefits from a varied diet that includes both meaty and algae-based foods to maintain health and vibrant coloration. Vitamin-enriched preparations are recommended. Feed two to three times daily in small portions.
Allard's Clownfish is more assertive than Ocellaris and Percula clownfish. Mature females can become quite territorial, particularly around their host anemone or nesting area. Should not be kept with other clownfish species. Compatible with tangs, wrasses, larger gobies, angelfish, and other moderately assertive community fish. May bully smaller, more timid species in confined spaces. Completely reef-safe with all corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityAllard's Clownfish breeds readily in captivity. Mated pairs spawn regularly on flat surfaces near their host anemone or chosen territory. Clutches typically contain 400-1000 eggs, which are guarded and aerated by the male. Eggs hatch in 7-10 days depending on temperature. Larvae require rotifers and phytoplankton as first foods, transitioning to baby brine shrimp after about one week. Captive-bred specimens are occasionally available.
