Paracheilinus lineopunctatus
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Line-spot Flasher Wrasse, Spot-lined Flasher Wrasse
The Linespot Flasher Wrasse is a stunning flasher wrasse known for its vivid red body adorned with distinctive white lines and spots. Males are particularly spectacular during flashing displays, when they extend their elaborate dorsal and anal fins while intensifying their red and blue coloration in rapid bursts. The white line markings along the body create a striking contrast against the deep red background, making this species instantly recognizable among flasher wrasses.
In the wild, Paracheilinus lineopunctatus is found in the Western Pacific, primarily around the Philippines and Indonesia. It inhabits rubble slopes and reef margins at moderate depths of 15 to 40 meters. Males maintain small harems of females and perform their characteristic flashing courtship displays primarily in the late afternoon. This species is frequently found in small aggregations near reef edges where currents deliver planktonic food.
The Linespot Flasher Wrasse is an intermediate-level species that adapts well to reef aquariums. It is completely reef-safe, peaceful, and readily accepts prepared foods once settled. A tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential as all flasher wrasses are notorious jumpers and this species is no exception. The aquarium should be at least 55 gallons with moderate water flow and open swimming space. The species can be kept singly, in pairs, or in small harems where the male's spectacular flashing displays are among the most beautiful sights in the marine aquarium hobby.
Linespot Flasher Wrasses are carnivorous planktivores that feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the water column. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, fish eggs, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are recommended, ideally three or more times daily to maintain body condition and coloration.
Linespot Flasher Wrasse is peaceful toward virtually all tankmates. Males may display competitively toward other flasher wrasse species, so it is best to keep only one Paracheilinus species per tank unless the aquarium is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, fairy wrasses, and all other peaceful community fish. Should not be kept with aggressive species.
