Cirrhilabrus condei
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Conde's Fairy Wrasse, Conde's Wrasse
The Condei Fairy Wrasse is a striking and relatively rare fairy wrasse prized by collectors for its bold black and red coloration. Males display a dramatic contrast of deep black body coloring overlaid with vivid red accents on the fins and face, creating a uniquely striking appearance among fairy wrasses. During nuptial displays, males intensify these colors and extend their fins to impressive effect. Females are more subdued, showing soft pinkish-brown tones typical of female Cirrhilabrus.
In the wild, Cirrhilabrus condei is found in the Western Pacific, primarily around Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It inhabits rubble slopes and reef margins at moderate depths, where males maintain small harems and perform courtship displays. This species is less frequently collected than many other fairy wrasses, making it a prized find for dedicated hobbyists seeking unusual Cirrhilabrus species.
The Condei Fairy Wrasse is an intermediate-level species that adapts reasonably well to aquarium life once settled. It is completely reef-safe and will not disturb corals or invertebrates. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping. The species does best in a mature aquarium of 55 gallons or larger with moderate water flow, plenty of live rock for shelter, and open swimming space. It can be kept singly or in a small harem in larger systems. While not as commonly available as some fairy wrasses, its unique coloration makes it highly sought after.
Condei Fairy Wrasses are carnivorous planktivores that feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the water column. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, fish eggs, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings per day are recommended. This species may take slightly longer to accept prepared foods than some other fairy wrasses but typically adapts within a few weeks.
Condei Fairy Wrasse is peaceful toward virtually all tankmates. Males may spar with other Cirrhilabrus species, so it is best to keep only one fairy wrasse species per tank unless the aquarium is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, flasher wrasses, and other peaceful community fish. Should not be kept with aggressive species.
Check CompatibilityCondei Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. Males perform courtship displays with fin flaring and color intensification. Spawning occurs at dusk with eggs released into the water column. Captive breeding has not been achieved for this species. All specimens are wild-caught.
