Cirrhilabrus sp.
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Koi Wrasse, Orange and White Fairy Wrasse
The Koi Fairy Wrasse is a visually spectacular and relatively rare fairy wrasse that earns its common name from its striking orange and white coloration reminiscent of Japanese koi fish. Males display a bold pattern of vivid orange-red patches contrasted against clean white areas, creating a uniquely eye-catching appearance that is instantly recognizable among fairy wrasses. The exact taxonomic status of this fish is still under discussion, with some considering it a distinct undescribed species or a geographic variant within the Cirrhilabrus genus. During courtship displays, males intensify their orange coloration dramatically.
In the wild, the Koi Fairy Wrasse is found in the Western Pacific, primarily collected from Indonesian and Philippine waters. It inhabits reef slopes and rubble areas at moderate depths. Like other Cirrhilabrus, males maintain harems and perform elaborate courtship displays. The species' limited collection areas and distinctive appearance have made it a highly desirable fish in the aquarium trade.
The Koi Fairy Wrasse is an intermediate-level species that adapts well to aquarium life once properly acclimated. It is completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals or invertebrates. A tight-fitting lid is essential as all fairy wrasses are prone to jumping. The species does well in aquariums of 55 gallons or larger with moderate water flow and open swimming space. Its koi-like coloration and active swimming behavior make it a showpiece fish that draws attention in any reef community.
Koi Fairy Wrasses are carnivorous planktivores that feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the water column. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, fish eggs, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings per day are recommended to maintain body condition and vibrant coloration. This species generally adapts to prepared foods within a short period.
Koi Fairy Wrasse is peaceful toward virtually all tankmates. Males may spar with other Cirrhilabrus species, so it is best to keep only one fairy wrasse species per tank unless the aquarium is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, flasher wrasses, and all other peaceful community fish. Should not be kept with aggressive species.
Check CompatibilityKoi Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. Males perform courtship displays at dusk, flaring their fins and intensifying their orange coloration. Captive breeding has not been achieved for this species. All specimens are wild-caught.
