Naso vlamingii
Family: Acanthuridae ยท Tangs & Surgeonfish
Also known as: Bignose Unicornfish, Vlaming's Unicornfish, Vlamingii Tang
The Vlamingi Tang is one of the largest and most spectacular surgeonfish species available to marine aquarists, capable of reaching a truly massive 24 inches in length. What sets this species apart, beyond its sheer size, is its remarkable ability to rapidly change colors and display patterns. At rest, the body is typically a muted gray-blue to olive with fine blue stippling, but when excited, displaying, or stressed, the Vlamingi Tang can flash vivid patterns of electric blue streaks, bright blue facial markings, and contrasting dark body bands in a matter of seconds. This chromatic display is among the most dramatic color-changing abilities of any commonly kept marine fish.
In the wild, the Vlamingi Tang is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Maldives through Indonesia and the Philippines to Fiji and the Great Barrier Reef. It inhabits outer reef slopes and drop-offs with strong currents, where it feeds on both macroalgae and zooplankton. Unlike the strictly herbivorous Naso lituratus, the Vlamingi Tang has a more omnivorous diet that includes a significant component of planktonic organisms plucked from the water column, along with benthic algae.
Due to its enormous potential adult size, the Vlamingi Tang requires an exceptionally large aquarium of at least 300 gallons, making it suitable only for the most dedicated hobbyists or public aquarium settings. Juveniles are often sold at 3 to 5 inches and are deceptively manageable, but they grow rapidly and will quickly outgrow all but the largest home systems. For those with appropriately sized aquariums, the Vlamingi Tang is an extraordinarily rewarding species offering dramatic color displays, bold personality, and impressive physical presence.
Vlamingi Tangs are omnivores that consume both macroalgae and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, provide daily sheets of dried nori or seaweed along with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets. Frozen omnivore blends work well. Large adults consume enormous quantities of food and require multiple daily feedings.
Vlamingi Tangs are generally peaceful toward dissimilar species despite their massive adult size. They may show aggression toward other Naso species and should be the only large unicornfish in the system. Compatible with large tangs of other genera, large wrasses, angelfish, and other robust community fish in very large systems. Completely reef-safe.
Check CompatibilityVlamingi Tangs have not been bred in home aquariums. They are pelagic spawners with an extended larval phase typical of the Naso genus. The rapid color-changing ability is present even in juveniles and becomes more pronounced with age. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught.
