Ctenochaetus tominiensis
Family: Acanthuridae ยท Tangs & Surgeonfish
Also known as: Tomini Surgeonfish, Orangetip Bristletooth, Flame Fin Tang
The Tomini Tang is a compact and beautifully understated member of the bristletooth tang group (Ctenochaetus), prized by reef aquarists for its manageable size, peaceful disposition, and outstanding algae-grazing abilities. Adults display a warm olive-brown to tan body with subtle vertical markings, accented by vivid orange and yellow edges on the dorsal and anal fins that glow under reef lighting. A distinctive orange ring often highlights the eye, adding to its appealing appearance. At a maximum size of approximately 6 inches, it is one of the smallest tangs commonly available and one of the best suited for medium-sized reef aquariums.
As a member of the Ctenochaetus genus, the Tomini Tang possesses flexible, comb-like teeth specialized for scraping detritus and fine filamentous algae from rock surfaces, rather than the rigid teeth of Zebrasoma or Acanthurus tangs that crop larger algae strands. This unique feeding adaptation makes it an exceptionally effective member of a reef aquarium's cleanup crew, as it meticulously works over every surface of live rock, removing microalgae and detritus that other tangs and herbivores often ignore. In the wild, it inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and rubble zones in the Western Pacific, particularly around Indonesia and the Philippines.
The Tomini Tang is widely regarded as one of the best tang species for reef aquariums due to its combination of small size, peaceful temperament, and vigorous algae control. Unlike many tang species that become increasingly aggressive as they grow, the Tomini Tang remains relatively mild-mannered throughout its life, making it compatible with a broad range of community tankmates. It rarely bothers corals or invertebrates and is completely reef-safe. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons provides adequate swimming space, and daily offerings of dried seaweed along with a varied diet will keep this fish healthy and vibrant for many years.
Tomini Tangs are herbivores and detritivores that use their specialized bristle-like teeth to scrape microalgae and detritus from rock surfaces. In captivity, offer dried nori or seaweed on a clip daily, along with Spirulina-enriched pellets and frozen herbivore preparations. They will also readily graze on natural algae growth in the aquarium. Supplement with vitamin-enriched foods to maintain health and prevent HLLE.
The Tomini Tang is one of the most peaceful tang species available and an excellent community reef fish. It rarely shows aggression toward other fish, including other tangs in sufficiently large systems. It is an ideal tang for mixed reef aquariums with peaceful inhabitants such as clownfish, gobies, blennies, fairy wrasses, and anthias. Avoid housing with highly aggressive species that may bully it. Completely reef-safe and one of the best algae grazers available for medium-sized reef tanks.
Check CompatibilityTomini Tangs have not been bred in home aquariums. Like other Ctenochaetus species, they are pelagic spawners with a larval phase that has not been successfully reared in captivity. All specimens available in the aquarium trade are wild-caught, primarily from Indonesian and Philippine waters.
