Ctenochaetus binotatus
Family: Acanthuridae ยท Tangs & Surgeonfish
Also known as: Two-spot Surgeonfish, Binotatus Tang, Blue-eye Bristletooth
The Two-Spot Bristletooth Tang is a practical, hardy, and understated member of the Ctenochaetus genus that has earned a devoted following among reef aquarists for its excellent algae-control abilities and peaceful disposition. Adults display a uniform olive-brown to brownish body with two small but distinctive dark spots near the base of the tail, from which the species derives its common name. The eyes are often ringed with blue, adding a subtle touch of color to an otherwise modest appearance. At a maximum size of about 8 inches, it occupies a comfortable middle ground in the tang size spectrum.
In the wild, the Two-Spot Bristletooth is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, from the Maldives and East Africa through Indonesia and the Philippines to Fiji and beyond. It inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and rubble zones at moderate depths, where it methodically scrapes detritus, microalgae, and organic film from rock surfaces using its specialized flexible, comb-like bristle teeth. This feeding adaptation makes it one of the most effective natural algae controllers available for reef aquariums, as it cleans surfaces that other herbivores typically overlook.
The Two-Spot Bristletooth Tang is an excellent choice for beginner to intermediate aquarists seeking a reliable, peaceful algae grazer for a reef system of 75 gallons or more. It is one of the hardier tang species, adapting readily to captive conditions and accepting a variety of herbivorous foods. Its peaceful temperament makes it compatible with a wide range of community tankmates, and it is completely reef-safe. For aquarists prioritizing function over flashiness, the Two-Spot Bristletooth delivers outstanding value as a tireless member of the cleanup crew.
Two-Spot Bristletooth Tangs are herbivores and detritivores that use their bristle-like teeth to scrape microalgae and organic film from surfaces. In captivity, offer dried nori or seaweed daily on a veggie clip, supplemented with Spirulina-enriched pellets and frozen herbivore preparations. They will eagerly graze on natural algae growth in the aquarium, making them excellent cleanup crew members.
The Two-Spot Bristletooth Tang is one of the most peaceful tang species available and an outstanding community reef fish. It rarely shows aggression toward other fish, including other tangs in large enough systems. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses, anthias, and other peaceful community fish. Completely reef-safe and an excellent addition to the cleanup crew.
Check CompatibilityTwo-Spot Bristletooth Tangs have not been bred in home aquariums. Like other Ctenochaetus species, they are pelagic spawners with a larval phase that has not been successfully reared in captivity. All specimens in the aquarium trade are wild-caught from Indo-Pacific collection points.
