Sargocentron spiniferum
Family: Holocentridae ยท Squirrelfish & Soldierfish
Also known as: Sabre Squirrelfish, Giant Squirrelfish, Long-Jawed Squirrelfish
The Violetfin Squirrelfish is the largest member of the squirrelfish family, reaching an impressive 17.7 inches or more. Its robust body is a brilliant red with distinctive violet to dark red fins that give the species its common name. The large preopercular spine is particularly prominent and venomous in this species, capable of inflicting painful wounds that require medical attention.
In the wild, this apex predator of the squirrelfish world inhabits outer reef slopes, channels, and drop-offs throughout the Indo-Pacific. It is a powerful nocturnal hunter that feeds on crabs, shrimp, and small fish. Its impressive size and bold coloration make it one of the most striking reef fish encountered by divers.
Due to its large adult size and semi-aggressive temperament, the Violetfin Squirrelfish requires a spacious aquarium with robust tankmates. It is reef-safe with respect to corals but will readily consume small fish and crustaceans. This species is best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide adequate space and appropriate companions.
Feed substantial portions of meaty foods including whole silversides, large shrimp, squid, and quality marine pellets. This large species has a hearty appetite and should be fed daily. Vitamin-enriched foods support long-term health.
Semi-aggressive and predatory toward small fish and crustaceans. House only with similarly sized or larger species. Will defend its territory against other squirrelfish.
Check CompatibilityVioletfin Squirrelfish have not been bred in home aquaria. As pelagic spawners, they release eggs into the water column, and the planktonic larvae are extremely difficult to rear.
