Pseudochromis springeri
Family: Pseudochromidae ยท Pseudochromis
Also known as: Springer's Dottyback, Blue-Striped Dottyback
The Springeri Dottyback is a striking small pseudochromid prized for its jet-black body accented by vivid electric-blue highlights along the dorsal fin, face, and gill margins. This bold contrast of deep black and neon blue makes it one of the most visually dramatic fish available at its modest size, creating a gemstone-like appearance that stands out against any background. Captive-bred specimens are widely available, making this species both an environmentally responsible and exceptionally hardy choice for reef aquariums.
Like most dottybacks, the Springeri Dottyback is a cave-dwelling species that establishes a home territory within the rockwork and defends it with surprising vigor for its size. It patrols its chosen area, darting in and out of crevices with quick, deliberate movements. While it is classified as semi-aggressive, captive-bred individuals tend to be notably less pugnacious than wild-caught fish, and its small size limits the impact of any territorial behavior. It generally ignores fish that are significantly different in shape and size.
The Springeri Dottyback is one of the easiest marine fish to keep, tolerating a wide range of conditions and readily accepting all prepared foods from the first day in the tank. It is completely reef-safe, posing no threat to corals, anemones, or larger invertebrates. As a bonus, it actively hunts and consumes small bristleworms and flatworms, providing natural pest control in reef systems. Its small size makes it suitable for nano reefs of 20 gallons or larger, and its bold colors and active behavior ensure it remains a visible and engaging aquarium inhabitant.
Springeri Dottybacks are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton. In captivity, they eagerly accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, marine pellets, and flake food. They actively hunt bristleworms and flatworms in the rockwork. Feed two to three times daily.
The Springeri Dottyback is semi-aggressive and may harass small, similarly shaped fish or newly added tankmates that enter its territory. Best kept singly unless the tank is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, blennies, and other community fish that differ in body shape. Captive-bred specimens are significantly less aggressive. Will consume bristleworms and small flatworms.
Check CompatibilitySpringeri Dottybacks are commercially captive-bred and can be bred by dedicated hobbyists. They are protogynous hermaphrodites, with the dominant fish in a pair becoming male. Males guard eggs deposited in caves or shells. Larvae can be reared on rotifers followed by baby brine shrimp. Pairs spawn regularly once bonded.
