Manonichthys splendens
Family: Pseudochromidae ยท Pseudochromis
Also known as: Splendid Pseudochromis
The Splendid Dottyback is a vividly colored pseudochromis species featuring a combination of vibrant yellow and striking blue-purple markings. Unlike many of its more aggressive dottyback relatives, this species is considered one of the more manageable members of the family, though it still possesses the characteristic territorial nature.
In the wild, Splendid Dottybacks inhabit coral-rich reef slopes and walls, claiming small territories among rock crevices and coral branches. They are solitary and fiercely territorial toward conspecifics but generally tolerate other species that don't encroach on their specific hiding spots.
In the aquarium, they are hardy and disease-resistant fish that readily accept frozen and prepared foods. Their small size (around 5 inches) and bold coloration make them popular choices for medium-sized reef tanks. Provide plenty of rockwork with numerous small caves and crevices to reduce territorial stress. Best kept singly unless in a very large system.
A small carnivore that feeds on zooplankton, tiny crustaceans, and worms. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and small marine pellets. Will also eat bristle worms and small pests, providing beneficial pest control in reef tanks. Feed once or twice daily.
Territorial toward similar-looking fish and conspecifics, but generally compatible with dissimilar-looking community fish. Avoid housing with other dottybacks, basslets, or small cave-dwelling fish. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, gobies, and other reef community species in adequately sized tanks.
Check CompatibilityPseudochromis species are among the more readily bred marine fish. Males guard egg clutches laid inside caves. Larvae are relatively large and can be raised on rotifers and baby brine shrimp.
