Cirrhitichthys aureus
Family: Cirrhitidae ยท Hawkfish
Also known as: Gold Hawkfish, Yellow Hawkfish
The Golden Hawkfish is a rare and highly sought-after hawkfish species prized for its stunning golden-yellow coloration. This small but striking fish displays a warm, solid yellow body that can range from pale lemon to a rich golden hue depending on mood and lighting conditions. Its compact body and large, expressive eyes give it an endearing appearance that makes it a standout addition to any marine aquarium.
This species tends to be more reserved than some of its hawkfish relatives, often spending time in sheltered areas among rock crevices before gaining confidence in its new environment. Once acclimated, the Golden Hawkfish will establish a favorite perching spot from which it observes tank activity and darts out to snatch passing food. It accepts frozen and prepared foods readily once settled, though initial feeding may require patience.
The Golden Hawkfish is relatively uncommon in the aquarium trade, which contributes to its higher price point. It requires an intermediate level of care due to its occasional shyness and sensitivity during acclimation. Once established, however, it proves to be a hardy and rewarding species that thrives for many years in a well-maintained marine aquarium.
Golden Hawkfish are carnivores that prey on small crustaceans and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, they accept frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed two to three times daily with varied protein-rich offerings.
The Golden Hawkfish can be semi-aggressive toward smaller fish and may consume very small ornamental shrimp. It is generally reef-safe with corals and pairs well with moderately sized community fish. Keep singly to avoid conspecific aggression.
Check CompatibilityGolden Hawkfish are protogynous hermaphrodites like other hawkfish species. Captive breeding has not been documented. In the wild, spawning occurs at dusk with pelagic egg dispersal.
