Amblyeleotris wheeleri
Family: Gobiidae ยท Gobies
Also known as: Wheeler's Shrimp Goby, Wheeler's Prawn Goby, Gorgeous Prawn Goby
Wheeler's Goby is one of the most popular and widely available shrimp gobies in the marine aquarium hobby, and for good reason. Its attractive pattern of alternating red-brown and white vertical bands creates a bold, eye-catching appearance that makes it a standout in any reef display. The bands are crisp and well-defined, and the dorsal fins often feature attractive red and white markings. Adults reach approximately 3 inches in length, making this a moderately sized and manageable species.
As a member of the Amblyeleotris genus, Wheeler's Goby is a classic shrimp symbiont that forms devoted partnerships with Alpheid pistol shrimp. The goby serves as the vigilant lookout at the burrow entrance while the industrious shrimp excavates and maintains their shared home. The goby communicates with its shrimp partner through subtle body movements, alerting it to potential threats. This symbiotic relationship is endlessly fascinating to observe and is one of the primary reasons hobbyists seek out this species.
Wheeler's Goby is a hardy and adaptable species that makes an excellent choice for aquarists of moderate experience. It requires a sand substrate for burrowing and a peaceful tank environment. While it will survive without a shrimp partner, providing one significantly enhances the goby's behavioral repertoire and overall well-being. This species is completely reef-safe and coexists peacefully with the vast majority of community fish.
Wheeler's Gobies are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and other meaty frozen foods. Feed twice daily with food directed to the substrate near the goby's burrow.
Wheeler's Gobies are peaceful and compatible with most community reef fish. They may show mild territorial behavior toward other shrimp gobies in small tanks. Keep only one shrimp goby species per tank unless the system is large with well-separated territories.
Check CompatibilityWheeler's Gobies form monogamous pairs and spawn within their shared burrow. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Larvae are planktonic and require live microscopic foods for successful rearing, making captive breeding moderately challenging.
