Pink-Speckled Shrimp Goby

The Pink-Speckled Shrimp Goby is one of the more colorful members of the Cryptocentrus genus, featuring a pale gray to white body densely covered with pink to reddish speckles and spots. This attractive pattern extends across the head and onto the fins, creating a visually striking appearance that rivals many more well-known goby species. At 3 inches maximum, it is a moderately sized shrimp goby well suited for medium reef aquariums.

Like other Cryptocentrus species, the Pink-Speckled Shrimp Goby forms a fascinating symbiotic partnership with alpheid pistol shrimp. The goby serves as a lookout at the burrow entrance while the shrimp excavates and maintains their shared home. This mutualistic relationship is one of the most captivating behaviors observable in a home aquarium. Compatible shrimp partners include Alpheus randalli, Alpheus bellulus, and Alpheus ochrostriatus.

Captive-bred specimens are available and are recommended over wild-caught individuals for their superior hardiness and easier transition to aquarium life. The Pink-Speckled Shrimp Goby is remarkably peaceful despite its somewhat vigilant demeanor. It spends most of its time perched at the entrance of its burrow, darting inside at the first sign of danger, only to cautiously emerge moments later. A fine sand substrate and ample live rock rubble are essential for burrow construction.
