Koumansetta rainfordi
Family: Gobiidae ยท Gobies
Also known as: Rainford's Goby, Old Glory Goby, Court Jester Goby
The Court Jester Goby, also known as Rainford's Goby, is a stunningly patterned small goby that has earned its regal common name through an intricate arrangement of horizontal stripes in green, orange, and blue that run the length of its compact body. These vivid markings, reminiscent of a court jester's motley costume, make it one of the most visually striking gobies available despite its diminutive size. The bold striping serves as camouflage among the filamentous algae beds where this species naturally forages.
In the wild, the Court Jester Goby inhabits shallow lagoons and protected reef flats across the Western Pacific, where it spends the majority of its time grazing on filamentous microalgae and the tiny organisms living within algal mats. This specialized herbivorous diet is the key consideration for keeping this species successfully in captivity. Unlike many gobies that readily transition to frozen and prepared foods, Rainford's Goby has a strong preference for grazing on natural algae growth and may initially refuse conventional aquarium foods. A well-established aquarium with abundant live rock supporting healthy microalgae growth is essential for the long-term success of this species.
The Court Jester Goby is classified as intermediate in care difficulty primarily because of its dietary requirements rather than any sensitivity to water conditions. In a mature reef aquarium with a thriving population of microalgae and copepods, this goby can be remarkably easy to keep, continuously grazing throughout the day and maintaining excellent condition. However, in a sterile or newly established tank lacking natural food sources, it may slowly waste away despite appearing healthy. Aquarists who provide the right environment are rewarded with a hardy, long-lived fish with exceptional personality and beauty.
The Court Jester Goby is primarily an herbivore that grazes continuously on filamentous microalgae and the microorganisms living within algal mats. In captivity, a mature tank with abundant natural algae growth on live rock is essential. Supplement with Spirulina-based foods, marine algae sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Some specimens can be trained to accept frozen foods such as mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp. A refugium or algae-covered rocks rotated into the display can help ensure a continuous food supply.
The Court Jester Goby is peaceful toward virtually all tankmates and makes an ideal citizen in a community reef aquarium. It may show mild territorial behavior toward other small bottom-dwelling gobies that compete for the same grazing areas. Excellent tankmates include clownfish, firefish, blennies, wrasses, and other peaceful species. Avoid keeping with aggressive fish that may prevent it from grazing. Completely reef-safe and will not damage corals or invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityCourt Jester Gobies form monogamous pairs that spawn within small crevices in the rockwork. The male guards the adhesive eggs until hatching. Larvae are very small and pelagic, making rearing extremely challenging. Captive breeding has been accomplished rarely. Sexing is difficult, though males may be slightly larger with a more pronounced head profile. Providing a mated pair with a mature, well-established tank with ample natural food sources is the best approach for those interested in attempting captive propagation.
