Gobiodon atrangulatus
Family: Gobiidae ยท Gobies
Also known as: Black Coral Goby, Black Coralgoby, Dark Clown Goby
The Black Clown Goby is a tiny, charming species that has become a favorite among nano reef enthusiasts. With its entirely jet-black coloration, round body shape, and oversized head, this diminutive goby has an endearing appearance that belies its hardy nature. Adults reach a maximum size of only 1.5 inches, making it one of the smallest marine fish commonly available in the aquarium trade. In the wild, it is found living among the branches of Acropora and other branching corals.
This species is an ideal choice for nano reef aquariums, requiring as little as 10 gallons of tank space. Despite its tiny size, the Black Clown Goby has a bold personality and will readily perch on coral branches, rocks, and even the aquarium glass, often in full view of the observer. It is a remarkably easy species to care for, accepting a variety of prepared and frozen foods with little hesitation.
One consideration is that Black Clown Gobies may occasionally nip at the polyps of SPS corals, particularly Acropora species, where they like to lay their eggs. However, the damage is typically minimal and only of concern in heavily stocked SPS-dominant systems. They produce a toxic mucus coating that deters predators, so avoid housing them with species that might try to eat them, as this could harm the predator. Overall, the Black Clown Goby is an excellent beginner species that adds character and interest to any small reef aquarium.
Black Clown Gobies are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans, zooplankton, and coral mucus in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality marine pellets sized appropriately for their small mouths. Feed twice daily.
Black Clown Gobies are peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive species. Multiple clown gobies of different species can coexist in larger tanks. Avoid housing with large predatory fish, as the goby's toxic mucus can harm fish that attempt to eat it. They do well with other nano-appropriate species.
Check CompatibilityBlack Clown Gobies are bidirectional hermaphrodites and can change sex in either direction. Pairs will spawn on the undersides of coral branches or flat rock surfaces. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Larval rearing is possible but requires very small first foods such as rotifers.
