Family: Antennariidae ยท Frogfish
Also known as: Sargassumfish, Sargassum Anglerfish
The Sargassum Frogfish is one of the most uniquely adapted marine fish in the world, having evolved to live exclusively among floating mats of Sargassum seaweed in the open ocean. Its body is an extraordinary work of natural camouflage, covered in fleshy tabs, filaments, and irregular skin appendages that perfectly mimic the fronds and bladders of its Sargassum habitat. The mottled coloration of brown, tan, olive, and cream further enhances the disguise, rendering this fish virtually invisible among the drifting weed.
Unlike reef-dwelling frogfish that sit on solid substrates, the Sargassum Frogfish is adapted for a pelagic lifestyle, using its modified pectoral fins like grasping hands to cling to and move through floating weed mats. It is found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide wherever Sargassum occurs, most notably in the Sargasso Sea of the North Atlantic. It is a voracious ambush predator that feeds on small fish, shrimp, and crabs that also inhabit the Sargassum ecosystem, and is famously cannibalistic, readily consuming other Sargassum Frogfish it encounters.
In the aquarium, the Sargassum Frogfish is considered an advanced-level species due to its specialized habitat requirements and challenging feeding behavior. Unlike most frogfish that can be kept in a standard reef or FOWLR setup, this species benefits from floating macroalgae or artificial plants near the surface to cling to, replicating its natural pelagic environment. It is extremely aggressive toward its own kind and will readily eat any tankmate small enough to swallow. Feeding can be difficult, as some specimens stubbornly refuse dead food and require live ghost shrimp or small live fish initially.
The Sargassum Frogfish is a carnivorous ambush predator that feeds on small fish, shrimp, and crabs in the wild. In captivity, it often requires live food initially, including live ghost shrimp and small gut-loaded feeder fish. Gradually wean onto frozen silversides, mysis shrimp, and raw shrimp offered on feeding tongs. Feed two to three times per week. This species is notoriously cannibalistic and will eat tankmates approaching its own size.
The Sargassum Frogfish is an extremely aggressive predator despite its small size. It is notoriously cannibalistic and will eat any fish or invertebrate it can fit in its mouth. Best kept in a dedicated species tank. If housed with other fish, companions must be too large to eat and slow enough not to outcompete it for food. Scorpionfish and lionfish of appropriate size may work as tankmates. Never keep with other frogfish of any species.
Check CompatibilitySargassum Frogfish produce floating egg rafts among the Sargassum weed. The male courts the female aggressively, and spawning occurs near the surface. The pelagic larvae drift with ocean currents and settle into Sargassum mats as they develop. Captive breeding is extremely rare and has only been accomplished by a handful of specialized breeders. The cannibalistic nature of the species makes raising multiple juveniles together nearly impossible.
