Gymnothorax melatremus
Family: Muraenidae ยท Eels
Also known as: Golden Dwarf Moray, Golden Moray Eel, Dwarf Golden Moray
The Dwarf Moray Eel is a highly sought-after species that has gained enormous popularity for being the smallest true moray eel available in the aquarium trade, reaching a maximum length of only about ten inches. Its compact size makes it the only moray eel genuinely suitable for nano and small reef aquariums. The body displays a warm golden-yellow to honey coloration that gives it a distinctive and attractive appearance, setting it apart from the typically darker-colored moray species.
In the wild, Dwarf Moray Eels inhabit coral-rich reef slopes and rubble zones throughout the Indo-Pacific, where they occupy tiny crevices and holes that larger moray species cannot access. Their diminutive size allows them to exploit a niche unavailable to their larger relatives. They are secretive, nocturnal predators that feed on small crustaceans and tiny fish. Despite their small size, they possess the same basic body plan and behavior as larger morays, making them a fascinating introduction to moray eel keeping.
In the aquarium, the Dwarf Moray Eel is a hardy and adaptable species that acclimates well to captive conditions. It is considered semi-aggressive due to its potential to consume very small fish and ornamental shrimp, but it is generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to eat. A secure lid is essential, as even this small moray is an accomplished escape artist. Provide a network of small caves and tight crevices in the rockwork where the eel can hide and feel secure. It is reef-safe with caution, as it will not harm corals but will eat small crustaceans.
Dwarf Moray Eels are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans and tiny fish in the wild. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, small pieces of krill, chopped silversides, and enriched brine shrimp. Use feeding tongs to deliver food near the eel's hiding spot. Feed every two to three days. Their small mouth limits the size of food items they can accept compared to larger morays.
The Dwarf Moray Eel is peaceful toward fish too large to eat but will consume very small fish and ornamental shrimp. Compatible with medium-sized community fish such as clownfish, small tangs, wrasses, and larger gobies. Avoid housing with very tiny species like small gobies or firefish that could be eaten. Can coexist with other small eels in appropriately sized tanks. Its small size makes it more community-friendly than most other moray species.
Check CompatibilityDwarf Moray Eels have not been successfully bred in home aquariums. Like other moray eels, they produce pelagic eggs that develop into transparent leptocephalus larvae requiring an extended oceanic planktonic phase. The complexity of this larval stage has prevented captive breeding from being achieved.
