Chromis margaritifer
Family: Pomacentridae Β· Chromis & Damselfish
Also known as: Bicolor Chromis, Black and White Chromis
The Twotone Chromis is a sleek and attractive schooling fish distinguished by its striking black body contrasted with a bright white tail. This bold color combination creates a visually appealing display, particularly when a group of these fish swims together in coordinated formation. The dark body may show hints of deep blue or purple under reef lighting, adding an extra dimension of beauty to an already eye-catching species.
In the wild, Chromis margaritifer is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, typically found on outer reef slopes and drop-offs at moderate depths. Like other Chromis species, it forms aggregations above coral structures where it feeds on zooplankton carried by reef currents. It shows a preference for areas with moderate to strong water flow, which provides a steady supply of planktonic food. The species is commonly found alongside other Chromis species, with mixed-species groups often seen hovering above the same coral formations.
In captivity, the Twotone Chromis is one of the hardiest and most peaceful damselfish available. It is well-suited for beginner aquarists and thrives in community reef tanks of 30 gallons or more. A group of three to five individuals creates an attractive schooling display. The species is completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals or invertebrates. Its peaceful nature means it can be housed with virtually any other non-aggressive community fish, making it a versatile and low-maintenance addition to the reef aquarium.
Twotone Chromis are omnivorous planktivores feeding on zooplankton and small organisms in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and cyclops. Feed two to three times daily in small portions.
Twotone Chromis are peaceful and compatible with virtually all community reef fish. They coexist well with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, blennies, and other peaceful species. Their gentle temperament makes them one of the most community-friendly damselfish available.
Check CompatibilityTwotone Chromis are substrate spawners with male parental care. The male guards the nest until hatching. Spawning may occur in captivity, but rearing the pelagic larvae is challenging and requires specialized live food cultures including rotifers.
